Guilherme Posser da Costa

Guilherme Posser da Costa ( born May 18, 1953) is a politician and former chairman of the party, Movimento de São Tomé e Príncipe de Libertação ( MLSTP - PSD) and former Prime Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe.

Political career

He studied law at the University of Coimbra in Portugal. In 1976 he joined the then Unity Party MLSTP.

In 1979 he worked for the Ministry of Justice of São Tomé e Príncipe and in 1981 became judge of the Supreme Court. Between 1982 and 1996 he held various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: 1986/1987 was ambassador to the European Community, FAO and responsible for the countries France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy and the Federal Republic of Germany. In the years 1987/1988 and from 1994 to 1996 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs, between minister responsible for development aid, which was granted the country.

From 5 January 1999 to 26 September 2001, he was prime minister. Since the parliamentary elections in March 2002, he was deputy. His party chose him for their Fourth Congress on 27 February 2005 with 708 votes to 3, as successor to the long-standing chairman Manuel Pinto da Costa.

Guilherme da Costa Posser heard how the former Prime Minister Maria das Neves to politicians, where the state demanded the abolition of their parliamentary immunity on charges of corruption. After he had in November 2004, the prosecutor's office because of these allegations, which he rejects, devastated he was initially sentenced to two years in prison. In mid-March 2005, the conviction was overturned and he was asked 1,500 euros in damages to pay.

It was expected that he would play against the President Fradique de Menezes at the presidential elections in 2006, but noted the MLSTP - PSD no candidates.
