Guillermo Rodríguez (politician)

Guillermo Rodríguez Lara (* November 4, 1924 in Pujilí, Ecuador ) is an Ecuadorian military, to 11 January 1976 was dictator of the Republic of Ecuador on 6 February 1972.

As commander of the Ecuadorian army led General Rodríguez together with Jorge Gómez Queirolo in February 1972 coup against President José María Velasco Ibarra. Velasco was deported into exile in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In the 4 years of military dictatorship Rodríguez prompted large-scale oil drilling and invested the money wisely in infrastructure, health care and the education of the country. In September 1975, there came to the military coup against internal Rodríguez Lara, which led to a fight between rival generals at the presidential palace. General Raúl González Alvear tried to conquer from an opposite funeral out the official residence. In this " Guerra de la Funeraria " said Rodríguez Lara episode ultimately prevailed because he could defend himself with the help of the Navy Admiral Alfredo Poveda.

1976, however, he was still separated from the military. The coup took place on the day of wedding celebrations for Rodríguez 's daughter instead, which were held in parts of the presidential palace. Rodriguez left his office without opposition. His successor was Poveda. The remaining part of his life spent Rodríguez largely on his hacienda in Pujilí, where he devoted himself to animal husbandry.
