Gurtnellen is a municipality in the canton of Uri in Switzerland.

Geography

Gurtnellen part of the Urner and Oberland is located in the upper part of the Urner Reuss Valley. The large-scale community also includes several side valleys. Gorneren is a left-side tributary valley to the Reuss valley and is drained by the Gorner brook. The Fellital is on the right side Reuss and is drained by the fur Ibach.

The community consists of numerous hamlets. Gurtnellen village ( 935 m above sea level. M. ) lies on the slope on the left side of the Reuss. Down in the Reuss valley is 1.5 km south of Gurtnellen - Wiler ( 741 m above sea level. M. ). There are the railway station and the village school. Between the mentioned parts of the village hamlet Stalden located ( 875 m above sea level. M. ). On the right bank of the Reuss, 2 km north-east of the village, the hamlet is Meitschlingen ( 648 m above sea level. M. ). And another one and a half kilometers to the north of the district Intschi ( 657 m above sea level. M. ). On the left side of the Reuss is a large area field adjoined whose largest settlement called Arni. There lies at 1,370 m above sea level. M. of Arnisee, whereas lead two aerial cable cars.

Bloss 1.3% of the community are built-up area. Also, the agricultural area is modest, with a share of 11.9%. The majority is of woods and forests ( 25.1%) covered or unproductive area (mountains; 61.7 %).

Gurtnellen bordered to the north Erstfeld, to the east by silenes, on the southeast by the municipality of Grisons Sedrun, in the south of Andermatt and Göschenen and to the west by Wassen.

Population

Languages

The local population speaks a high Alemannic dialect. At the last census in 2000 gave 97.31 % German, Portuguese 1.58% and 0.48 % French as their mother tongue / primary language.

Religions - faiths

The population was formerly full member of the Roman Catholic Church. The confessional relations in 2000 still show the original structures. 575 persons ( 91.13 %) were Catholic, 2.22% Protestant Reformed Christians and 1.74 % non-religious. 27 people ( 4.28% ) did not respond to their creed.

Origin - Nationality

Of the 643 residents of the end of 2005 were 620 ( 96.88 %), Swiss citizen. The few immigrants came from southern Europe ( Portugal and Italy), Central Europe (France, Austria, Liechtenstein ) and from Sri Lanka.

Policy

Legislature

The local council is the legislative body. They shall meet at least once a year.

Executive

The executive branch is the seven-member council. He is a part-time working. Current mayor is beat Jörg.

Economy

The community is predominantly agricultural until today. In 2000 there were 44 farms, employing 107 people. In 2001, included industrial and commercial workplaces with 73 employees, 5, the services sector 28 companies and 148 employees.

Gurtnellen relies repeatedly on financial support from state or foreign richer communities. In 2002, for example, supported the Zurich town, the authorities Gurtnellen CHF 100,000 rehabilitation of the district school house tract and building services. In 2007 Gurtnellen received by the canton Uri CHF 500,000 for the rehabilitation of municipal finances paid, as this would not be possible under its own power to promote the rehabilitation.

Of the economically active in 2000 268 people were working Gurtnellens 143 ( 53.36 %) in their own community. The 125 commuters do their work in other municipalities of the canton. Among 46 people in Altdorf, 16 in Erstfeld, 14 in Wassen and 12 in silenes. There were also 100 commuters. These came mainly from silenes (28 people), Altdorf (27) Schattdorf (15) and Schattdorf (10).

Tourism is of minor importance.

Traffic

The community is represented by lines 1 ( Flüelen - Göschenen ) - Auto AG Uri accessible by public transport and 4 ( Gurtnellen village Gurtnellen - Wiler ).

There used to stop Intschi and the Station Gurtnellen the Gotthard railway, but since the Swiss Federal Railways regional traffic on the line Erstfeld - has shifted Göschenen on the road, keep in Gurtnellen and Intschi, as well as in Amsteg- silenes and Wassen no more moves. History

Keltoromanische and Alemannic floor and settlement names point to an early settlement. In the early Middle Ages, the Abbey of Zurich Bahnhofstrasse possessed large land holdings in the community. By no later than 1688, the community was a unit because they got their own Dorfvögte. Because of its location on the Gotthard route, French troops were in the times of the Helvetic Republic from 1798 to 1800 stationed in the community.

Schools, colleges

In Gurtnellen village and Gurtnellen - Wiler there are nursery and primary school. Gurtnellen - Wiler is also the center for the upper school (from Year 7 ) as the county school tuition Urner Oberland (municipalities Gurtnellen, Wassen and Göschenen ).

Others

On 31 May 2006 it came in Gurtnellen to a rock fall, which claimed two lives. Then a crash of endangered rock head above the A2 at Gurtnellen was blown up by 11 clock on June 23.
