Guru Arjan

Arjan Dev ( born April 15, 1563 Amritsar, † May 30, 1606 in Lahore ) also Arjun Dev, was the fifth Guru of the Sikhs. His father was the fourth Guru Ram Das. 1581 he took over the Guru - office of his father.

He summed up the hymns of his predecessors and writings of Islam and Hinduism to the holy book of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib, together. However Arjan Dev emphasized more and more the distinction from other religions, whereas the first guru, Guru Nanak, wanted to reconcile. Instead of "There is no Hindu, and there is no Muslim" (There's only human; Guru Nanak ) he said " We are neither Hindus nor Muslims ."

Arjan Dev started the construction of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. As more and more Muslims converted to Sikhism and Arjan Dev had a great influence, the Emperor Jahangir of the development was critical of and let Arjan Dev 1606 torture you to death.
