Guys and Dolls

Guys and Dolls is a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser singing. The book is by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling on motifs of the short story The Idyll Of Miss Sarah Brown by Damon Runyon, more plot elements and characters were borrowed from other stories Runyons, especially from Pick the Winner. The premiere took place on 24 November 1950 46th Street Theatre in New York. With 1200 performances, the musical was a huge success. The piece was produced by Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin, George S. Kaufman directed, Michael Kidd worked out the choreography.

The opening in the West End was on May 28, 1953 at the Coliseum Theatre; the musical was performed there 555 times. The German -language premiere was on May 26, 1969, at the Theater Bremen in a translation by Janne Furch instead.

Content

Nathan Detroit is organizing illegal gambling. Because the state power in the form of Lieutenant Brannigan always keeps a watchful eye on the gaming community, the venue must be constantly replaced.
