Hammer & Tongs

Hammer & Tongs is a team of producers from the UK, consisting of the director Garth Jennings (born 1972 in Essex ) and the film producer Nick Goldsmith ( * 1971). Dominic Leung, who is usually employed as an editor, was described by Jennings as the third member, the public hammer & Tongs are, however, mostly perceived as a duo. After they had become known for her music videos, they turned the films The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) and Son of Rambow (2007).

Career

Jennings and Goldsmith got to know, as both the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design visited. There, she studied graphic design. In the early 1990s they turned their first music video for the track Way In My Brain SL2 of the electric project. It was followed by productions for, among others, Ash, Pulp and Eels. Originally, the directing was done either by the whole team or Jennings, Goldsmith and Leung turned each of them alone, which is why Hammer & Tongs some time shooting multiple videos simultaneously. Since the late 1990s, Goldsmith is barely active as a director and the other two are working as directors under their own name.

The video for Blur's Coffee & TV in 1999 had a budget of about 90000-100000 pounds, making it the largest ever project of Hammer & Tongs. It tells the story of an anthropomorphic milk carton who embarks on a search for the missing person depicted on it. The video won awards including the NME Awards and the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Video of the Year. Among the artists who could turn several videos of Hammer & Tongs in the sequence, include Fatboy Slim, Supergrass, Badly Drawn Boy and Beck.

First time in 2005 came a feature film of the team in the cinemas, the Douglas Adams adaptation Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. With a production budget of an estimated 50 million U.S. dollars, the film grossed a worldwide about 100 million U.S. dollars. Followed in 2007 Son of Rambow, in 2008 won the Audience Award at the Locarno Film Festival.

2010, a collection of music videos and short films was published as The Hammer & Tongs Collection on DVD.
