Harikanassou

Region

Harikanassou is a rural municipality in the department of Boboye in Niger.

Geography

Harikanassou is located at the junction of the Sahel to large landscape Sudan. The neighboring municipalities are Koygolo in the north, Kiota in the east, N'Gonga in the south, southwest and Dantchandou Kouré in the northwest. The municipality is divided into 36 administrative villages, 14 traditional villages and eight hamlets. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village Harikanassou.

In the dry season the last wild population of West African giraffes Kouré wanders into the territory of Harikanassou.

History

The rural community Harikanassou went as an administrative unit 2002 through the course of a nationwide administrative reform from the western part of the canton Harikanassou / Kiota.

Population

At the 2001 census Harikanassou had 19,976 inhabitants. For the year 2010 26.752 inhabitants were calculated. Harikanassou is mainly inhabited by the ethnic group of the Zarma.

Economy and infrastructure

Due to its location in the valley of the Dallol Bosso, the water table is only a few meters below the surface, allowing the investment of irrigated vegetable gardens. These are managed by the women of the community who grow there salads, beans, pumpkins, onions and tomatoes. Many of the male population, however, go in the dry season in the city or to a neighboring country Nigeria to find work.
