Härjedalen

Härjedalen is a historical Swedish province in the country part of Norrland.

Geography

Härjedalen bordered on the south Dalarna, on the west by Norway, to the north and east to Jämtland and Hälsingland Medelpad. Four-fifths of the area Härjedalens are over 500 m. Even Sweden's highest village ( Högvålen ) is located here.

History

The name comes from the ancient Härjedalen West Norwegian Herjárdalr, meaning " valley of the River Härje ".

The countryside belonged to 1645 to Norway and was ceded along with Jamtland in the Treaty of Brömsebro to Sweden.
