Run

The Heart River rises in the plains of Billings County, in the Little Missouri National Grassland near the southern half of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park and flows generally in an easterly direction through the Stark County to Gladstone, where the Green River joins. It then flows to Belfield and South Heart over, by the Patterson reservoir to Dickinson and then southeasterly direction into the Grant County. It then flows through the artificial Lake Tschida, which is dammed by the Heart Butte Dam. Below the dam, the course then turns to the northeast and reaches the Morton County, where it flows about 11 km south of Mandan on the eastern border of the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in the Missouri River.
