Heidi Schmid

Heidi Schmid, after marriage Adelheid Grundmann -Schmid ( born December 5, 1938 in Klagenfurt) was in the 1960s, a champion in foil fencing and won at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 the gold medal in her sport.

At age 13, Heidi Schmid discovered her love for the sport of fencing. A year later, she struggled with at the German Youth Championships and was the first attempt to third parties. In the years 1957, 1959, and 1964 to 1968 she was German champion in foil individual competition of the ladies.

On September 1, 1960, the then- student at the Palazzo dei Congressi won after the battle with the Romanian Maria Vicol, Heidi Schmid 4-3 chose to Olympic Gold. At a formal reception on their return to Augsburg 23,000 people came to Augsburg Rosenau Stadium.

Four years later, at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, the athlete was again on the podium. As a member of the German Women's Foil - team ( in the cast Gudrun Theuerkauff, Heidi Schmid, Rosemarie Schernberger and Helga Mees ), who had fought his way to third place, she received a bronze medal.

1961 Heidi Schmid was world champion as both students world champion in foil fencing. In the same year she was named in the Federal Republic of Germany Athlete of the Year. Her sporting achievements also include a Vice World Cup 1957 in single and two Vice World Championships with the team.

After her athletic career, Heidi Schmid was a music teacher and married her fellow teachers Hans Grundmann.

Your home club, the TSV Schwaben Augsburg in 1847, has awarded her an honorary member in 1995.
