Heinkel HD 38

The Heinkel HD 38 was a German fighter aircraft. HD stands for " Heinkel Biplane ".

History

The Heinkel HD 38 was developed in the late 1920s. It is the successor to the HD 37 with reinforced chassis for catapult testing. The test pattern of 1929, the HD 38a was compared in Lipetsk with the Fokker D.XIII. The prototype of the HD 38b with the registration D -1609 ( serial no 320 ) had a paneled radiator under the engine. With this a hot cooling and a front cooler was tested in Travemünde. Chief pilot Rolf Strong presented on 7 May 1929 set a speed record with a 500 kg payload of 259.927 km / h. The HD 38c was also tested in Travemünde. At the planes with the identifications D- 2213 and D- 2386 a disguised chassis was tested. The D- 2061 and D- 2078 were thereby broken.

Construction

Despite the similarity with the HD 37, HD 38 is a new design. The Heinkel HD 38 was a compact single-engine biplane with staggered wings of equal span, which were connected by N- struts. The conventional succession tail was braced from the fuselage. The driver's seat was open. The HD 38 had a tailwheel landing gear. A conversion to a seaplane was quickly possible by the wheels have been replaced by floats.
