Heinkel He 119

The Heinkel He 119 was a German aircraft record of Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke, which was planned as a fast reconnaissance and later should serve as a starting pattern for a fast bomber once.

History

The He 119 was developed from the autumn of 1935 under the project name P. 1055 and should consider all former production engineering and aerodynamic advances. After the first flights of the He 119 V1 in the summer of 1936 Heinkel was the Reich Air Ministry (RLM ) any continuation of work prohibited, as in its opinion is no military utility of the machine was to be expected. The work was, however, continued in spite of threats from Heinkel. After completion of the V5 but all work was stopped after a renewed development ban.

Construction

To achieve maximum speed, the front surface of the aircraft is minimized by ordering the main components at a time. So the engine was moved to the middle of the fuselage and the propeller driven by a propeller shaft that ran through the crew compartment that was at the forefront. The drive only a Daimler -Benz DB 606 engine double came with 2350 hp in question, otherwise no powerful engines were available. The DB 606 consisted of two side by side in an angle of 44 ° arranged Daimler -Benz DB 601 A1 V12 engines, which interacted with a propeller shaft. Similarly, the Heinkel He 100 was also at the He 119, a surface evaporative cooling provided with the same problems.

In 1937, the He 119 V4 reached a measured top speed of 620 km / h in 4200 m height. In the subsequent record flight 1000 km at an average speed of 504.988 km / h was determined. However, this record lasted only a week, as an Italian Breda 88 set a new record aufstellte. A second record attempt ended due to lack of fuel in a crash landing.

In addition to the normal country version also Seeausführung with floats was tested. To a series production as fast bomber did not happen because the aircraft compared to other similar aircraft was considerably more expensive. It only five prototypes were produced, all of which were scrapped.

Export to Japan

After the setting of the development work for the RLM Heinkel forced into an export share of the He 119 Japan acquired then in addition to the replica rights, but also the two patterns V7 and V8.

The machines were transported in crates to Japan, there remounted in the testing center of the Japanese Naval Air Force and flown by captain Nitschke. For a replica of it but did not. However, an influence is evident in the design of the Yokosuka R2Y " Keiun ", which was driven by a mock DB -606 engine. Again, the design was chosen with a mid-engine and a remote shaft.
