Heinkel He 49

The Heinkel He 49 (HD 49) was a single-engine fighter aircraft of Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke from 1932., You could be equipped with a solid chassis with split axle and tail skid, but also with double floats.

The aircraft was a einstieliger, tense sesquiplane with in span and tread depth smaller lower wing and ailerons only on the upper surface. The fuselage consisted of a welded steel tube truss with rectangular cross section and was dressed in the front part until the pilot seat with removable light metal sheets. The remaining portion was placed with wood slats on oval shape and covered with fabric. The against each other and from the fuselage tail were strained fabric covered metal frameworks. All controls had aerodynamic and mass balance.

History

The fighter HD 49 ( Wnr. 371, registration D - 2363, D- IREH later ) was 1931/32 manufactured as a single piece on behalf of the Navy. The first flights took place on 7 September 1932 at the test site in Travemünde held from November 7, 1932 in Rechlin. There, the aircraft was compared and tested in a dogfight with both the previous pattern Heinkel HD 38 as well as with the hunter Arado Ar 65. The HD 49 was, however, the Army Ordnance Office " throughout very complicated and consequently absolutely unsuitable for batch production under construction " as assessed so that no further copies were built. The required simplification was finally on the development, the He 51, taken into account.
