Geography

The located about 10 km in south- north direction extending Heinz Mountain is bounded on the west by the Heinzenberggrat, to the east by the Rhine. Especially in the southern part of the slope rises fairly gently ( with 15 to 20 percent ) and agriculture provides good conditions. To the villages there are meadows and pastures home, on the lower slopes and fields and fruit trees. In a zone of mountain pastures adjoined. Altitudes above 1,800 m above sea level. M. are occupied by vast pastures. Duke Henri de Rohan praised the varied cultural landscape effusively as " the most beautiful mountain in the world ."

The subsoil consists of little resistant Bündnerschiefer. Subsidence and minor landslides dominate the picture. Feared of the Heinz mountain was to the south -limiting torrent Nolla, the end of the 18th century, within a few decades, a deep ravine dug and Thusis struck with its floods. It required extensive barriers to stabilize the situation. Also, the Port One Tobel shows greater erosion damage.

The Heinzenberggrat begins in the south at 1848 m high glass ball, a historically significant transition ( mule track ) from Thusis to Safiental. The most salient points of the developed by a promising trail ridge are Lüschgrat ( 2179 m), Tguma ( 2163 m) and Präzer Höhi (2120 m). To the west, the ridge falls abruptly from the Safiental.

Communities

At the foot of the slope to about 700 m above sea level. M. are the major places Thusis and Cazis. On a lower level slope ( 850-1000 m) are Masein and tartar above ( 1140-1270 m) Urmein, Flerden, Portein, Sarn and Prec. Supreme village is the typical Walser scattered settlement Tschappina 1400 to 1600 m.

Starting from the early Germanized Thusis spread to the German language in the smaller villages and displaced the ancestral Romance ( Sutsilvan ) for the most part. Today only a handful of older people in the outer Heinz Berg (especially in Prec ) dominates the Heinz Berger Romansh. Except Cazis to all communities joined in the 16th century of the Reformation.

The ten municipalities form the circle Thusis. The former, resolved on 1 January 2001 Heinz Berg district was composed of the counties Thusis Domleschg and Safien. Since then, the county Thusis belongs to the district Rhine.
