Heltermaa

Heltermaa ( German Helterma ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the Estonian rural community Pühalepa ( Pühhalep ) on the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( Dago ). It is right on the Baltic Sea, about 25 kilometers southeast of the island's capital Kärdla ( Kertel ). Heltermaa has 40 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011).

History

Heltermaa was first mentioned in 1620 under the name Heltermecky as homestead. The place gained importance especially as the shortest route between the island of Hiiumaa and the Estonian mainland. In spring, summer and autumn, the track was covered with special sailing boats, in the winter, crossed the frozen Baltic Sea on foot or on horseback.

Port Heltermaa

In Heltermaa is the major ferry port of Hiiumaa. It was founded in 1860 on the initiative of the local Baltic German landlords. In the 1870s, the steamship Progress ran a regular ferry service between Haapsalu ( Haapsalu ) and Heltermaa.

From Heltermaa now run regularly passenger and car ferries to the port of Rohuküla ( Rohho ) on the mainland. In 1996, a new port terminal and a hotel were inaugurated. In 1998, the seabed between Heltermaa and the mainland was vertief and put the new ferry Ofelia in operation. A year later, the new yacht harbor was completed.

Near the harbor is located since 2000 on the sea, a statue of the Estonian sculptor Aulin Rimm ( 1930-1999 ).
