Valipe

Valipe is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Pühalepa ( Pühalepa vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Description and History

Valipe ( German Wallipäh ) has 3 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2011). The place is situated on the south coast of Hiiumaa, two kilometers south-east of Suuremõisa ( Grossenhof ).

1254 began the Livonian Order in Valipe with the construction of his first fortress on Hiiumaa. The " Wallepe stone house" but remained unfinished.

1563 came Hiiumaa to the Swedish crown. 1576 established the new ruler in the place a little jump, the so-called " Jürgensburg ". Today there are still a few square pieces of wall and the remains of a fountain the attachment to see.

1529 the estate of Valipe was mentioned. From 1571 to 1596 it belonged to a certain pastor Mauritz Matzon. In the 16th and 17th centuries there was a harbor at Valipe.
