Suuresadama ( historical German name Deep Harbour ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Pühalepa ( Pühalepa vald ). It is located in the northeast of the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Description and History

Suuresadama today only 8 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) .. The village is situated on the Baltic coast, ten kilometers south east of the island's capital Kärdla. Other names of the place are popularly Suursadam and Suursadama.

The port is already found on a nautical chart from the 1570s. The place was first mentioned in 1593 as Serle ham ( after the nearby village Sääre ) or Djupham (Swedish for " deep harbor ").

In the Middle Ages was fired in Suuresadama lime, then one of the main export products of the island.

Port

In Suuresadama is the historic deep-water port ( Suursadam ) the island of Hiiumaa. From it are derived the German and Estonian name of the place, " large port " from. 1638 a customs station was established to promote trade with other Baltic ports. Since the 17th century shipbuilding is detected in the city: in 1680 founded the Dutch Erasmus Jakobson a large shipyard. Suuresadama also served as a winter haven for coastal vessels.

With the Soviet occupation of Estonia was founded in a Fischereikolchose Suuresadama. The facility was formerly one of the most important fishing ports of Western Estonia, but has now largely lost its importance due to the ports of Kärdla and Heltermaa. The harbor is still fishing and pilot boats with a maximum length of 35 m and maximum depth of 2.8 m. It houses a small shipyard.

" Hioma "

Pride the inhabitants are on the 1848 on behalf of the German Baltic nobleman Heinrich Georg Eduard von Ungern- Sternberg ( 1782-1861 ), completed in Suuresadama ship Hioma. It was 358 gross tons is one of the biggest sailing ships of his time in the Baltics.

The first Estonian ship crossed the equator Hioma 1854, sailed in the southern hemisphere, rounded Cape Horn and continued with his Estonian crew in the Pacific Ocean. The ship sank in 1857.
