He was the son of Count Rainald II of Bar and Mousson and Agnes of Champagne.

Since Henry was still a minor when his father died in 1170, his mother took him to 1173 for the regency. Since some of their ancestors once were the Counts of Verdun, Agnes tried of Champagne in 1172 the Bishop of Verdun to Wiederbelehnung Henry with the county, but he refused. Agnes responded by letting their troops ravage of the county Verdun. Agnes and Henry were subsequently excommunicated until they gave in 1177.

1178 began the bishop of Toul in Liverdun to build with the permission of the Duke of Upper Lorraine, Simon II a castle. Overwhelmed with this task, the bishop Heinrich left the castle. The process affected the ratio of Henry duke apparently not, although this may have felt threatened by the castles Liverdun, Amance and Mousson.

Heinrich was a maternal cousin of Philip II Augustus of France. He was also at the coronation on November 1, 1179 in Reims by their common uncle the Cardinal Archbishop of Reims, Wilhelm with the white hands, present.

After 1187 large parts of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem had been conquered, including the city of Jerusalem by Saladin vowed Heinrich participation in the Third Crusade. Even before the main army of the Crusade II under Philip Augustus and Richard the Lionheart of England, he embarked with his younger brother Theobald in 1189, with its quota by Outremer, where he is in the late summer of the currently started Siege of Acre ( 1189-1191 ) joined. In the summer of 1190 came just as his uncle Theobald V of Blois and Stephen I of Sancerre and his cousin Henry II of Champagne before an Acre. On October 4, 1190, he was severely wounded at the Battle of Acre against Saladin's troops and died several days later from his injuries. As he was unmarried and childless, inherited his brother Theobald his titles and estates.
