Henry S. Walbridge

Henry Sanford Walbridge ( born April 8, 1801 in Norwich, Connecticut; † January 27, 1869 in Hoboken, New Jersey) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1851 and 1853 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Hiram Walbridge was his cousin.

Career

Henry Sanford Walbridge attended school in Bennington (Vermont ). His youth was overshadowed by the British -American War. In 1820 he moved to Ithaca in Tompkins County. He studied law. After receiving his license to practice law, he began to practice in Ithaca. In 1824 he worked as a clerk in the District Council of Tompkins County. He sat 1829 in the New York State Assembly. He was also in 1829 and 1842 President of the Village Council of Ithaca. He sat again in 1846 in the New York State Assembly. Politically he belonged to the Whig party.

In the congressional elections of 1850 for the 32nd Congress Walbridge in the 26th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William Terry Jackson on March 4, 1851. Since he gave up for reelection in 1852, he retired after the March 3, 1853 out of the Congress.

Between 1858 and 1868 he was a trustee at the Ithaca Academy. During this time he held 1859-1868 the post of guardianship and estate judge in Tompkins County. In 1868 he moved to Leonia (New Jersey), but practiced in New York City. He died about four years after the end of the civil war in a train accident in the mountains tunnel in Hoboken. His body was then buried in the same cemetery in Ithaca.
