Heřmanův Městec

Heřmanův Městec ( German Hermannstädtel ) is a small town in eastern Bohemia Chrudim Okres with about 5200 inhabitants.

History

Heřmanův Městec was founded in the first half of the 14th century and named after the founder Hermann von Mrdice. The city belonged from 1457 to 1538 the Trček of Lipa, then changing families, from 1661 ( to 1794 ) Count Spork, 1828 Finally the Count Kinsky.

Since 1650 settled Jews in Heřmanův Městec, in a separate suburb, which is still partly preserved. It is known especially the large Jewish cemetery and the synagogue (now showroom ).

The city's attractions include the St. Bartholomew's Church (built 1756-62 ) and the castle (now a retirement home, therefore inaccessible ). In the first half of the 20th century Heřmanův Městec was popular as a summer resort of artists, a number of Jugendstil buildings dates from this period.
