Chrudim

Chrudim is a town in eastern Bohemia Region at the Chrudimka, with (2001) 23,898 inhabitants.

History

Probably Chrudim was founded in the 9th century, first mentioned in 1055, as there, a Bohemian prince Břetislav I died. From the 13th century it was a royal city, which was one possession in the Czech queens. In the Middle Ages and the early modern period it was an important regional center. A Capuchin monastery with St. Joseph 's Church was founded in 1656. From the end of the 17th century, it became a famous place of pilgrimage ( miraculous Salvator picture). Since the 19th century, it has not as quickly developed as other cities in the surrounding area. Today, the city is part of the Pardubice Region.
