Herschel C. Loveless

Herschel Celiel Loveless ( born May 5, 1911 in Hedrick, Keokuk County, Iowa, † May 4, 1989 in Ottumwa, Iowa ) was an American politician (Democratic Party) and from 1957 to 1961 the 34th Governor of the state of Iowa.

Early years and political rise

Herschel Loveless attended Ottumwa High School. After that, he was employed by a railway company before he was responsible for the operation of turbines at the John Morrell Company.

Between 1947 and 1949 he was employed by the town of Ottumwa as Head of Road Office. In 1949 he became mayor of this city. In 1952, he competed unsuccessfully for the office of governor of Iowa. Also unsuccessful was his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives two years later. In 1956 he was elected as a candidate but his party for governor of his state.

Governor of Iowa

Loveless took up his new post on January 17, 1957. After a re-election in 1958, he could remain in office until January 12, 1961. During his reign the public school system were reformed and administratively restructured. For nerve- ill patients, a separate budget item was created. The unemployment allowance and the Accident Compensation for workers went up and for the teachers a monthly minimum pension has been set. At the same outstanding government debt has been subject to default interest longer.

After the end of his governorship was Herschel Loveless 1961-1969 member of a negotiating committee of government ( Renegotiation Board), then he was in 1969 president of Chromalloy American Corporation. The rest of his life he spent in retirement. Herschel Loveless died in May 1989 and was buried in the cemetery of Ottumwa. With his wife, Amelia R. Howard, he had two children.
