Robert D. Fulton

Robert David Fulton ( born May 13, 1929 in Waterloo, Iowa ) is an American politician (Democratic Party). He was the 37th Governor of Iowa in 1969.

Career

Fulton attended the Iowa State Teachers College and then the University of Iowa, where he graduated in 1958 his law. Between 1958 and 1960, Fulton was a deputy in the House of Representatives from Iowa, from 1962 to 1964 he was a member of the Senate of Iowa.

In 1964 he was elected lieutenant governor of his state. This office he held between 1965 and 1 January 1969. On this day, the incumbent Governor Harold Hughes resigned from his post to go to the U.S. Senate. Although a new governor of Iowa was elected in November 1968, Robert Ray already, this was allowed to begin his term in office under the Constitution until after the end of the previous term. This date was due on 16 January 1969. The remaining 16 days had to be bridged as Governor Lieutenant Governor Fulton.

By 1999, Robert Fulton was the last governor of Iowa, who belonged to the Democrats. In the gubernatorial elections of 1970 he ran unsuccessfully against Ray. Fulton was then the Democratic National Committee and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1972. Together with his wife Rachel Breault Robert Fulton has four children.
