John Scott (Iowa politician)

John Scott ( born April 14, 1824 Jefferson County, Ohio; † September 23, 1903 in Des Moines, Iowa ) was an American politician. Between 1868 and 1870 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Iowa.

Career

John Scott attended the Franklin College in New Athens until 1841. After a subsequent study of law and its 1845 made ​​admission to the bar he began to work in this profession. In the meantime, he worked as a teacher in Ohio and Kentucky. During the Mexican War he was a soldier of a volunteer unit from Kentucky. He fell in the meantime for eight months in captivity. After the war he was in Kentucky published a newspaper. In addition, he was once again working as a teacher in Owingsville. In the fall of 1856 he came to Nevada in Iowa, where he practiced law and simultaneously worked in agriculture and real estate.

Politically, Scott joined the Republican Party. Between 1859 and 1861 he sat in the Senate of Iowa. During the Civil War he served in the army of the Union, where he rose to colonel. In 1868 he was elected to the side of Samuel Merrill for Lieutenant Governor of Iowa. This post he held 1868-1870. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. He then worked for the tax authority. In 1885 he was elected again to the Senate of Iowa. He was a member and chairman of several organizations in his state. John Scott died on September 23, 1903 in Des Moines.
