William H. Nicholas

William H. Nicholas ( born October 10, 1892 in Bristow, Butler County, Iowa; † August 13, 1984 in Mason City, Iowa ) was an American politician. Between 1951 and 1953, and again from 1957 to 1959 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Iowa.

Career

William Nicholas graduated from Bristow High School and the State Teachers Institute in Cedar Falls. After that he worked between 1910 and 1915 as a teacher in Butler County. Between 1916 and 1924 he was employed as a recorder at the local district administration. This period was interrupted by his time in the United States Navy during World War II. There he was employed in the Great Lakes region. Later he worked in agriculture. There, he grew especially turkeys. He also dealt in Florida with the cultivation of citrus fruits.

Politically, Nicholas member of the Republican Party. Between 1946 and 1948 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Iowa. For four years he was a member of the highway commission of his state; besides, he was one of the commissioners for the Great Mississippi River Road. He also was a member of the Iowa Development Commission. 1950 Nicholas was elected alongside William S. Beardsley for Lieutenant Governor of Iowa. This post he held 1951-1953. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. The same position which he held from 1957-1959 again. This time he served under Governor Herschel C. Loveless. During his time as Lieutenant Governor, he represented his country at many official events.

After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor, he continued his previous activities. He died on 13 August 1984 in Mason City in Cerro Gordo County.
