Arch W. McFarlane

Arch W. McFarlane ( born April 14, 1885 in Waterloo, Iowa, † July 24, 1960 in Chicago, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1928 and 1933 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Iowa.

Career

Arch McFarlane attended the public schools of his home. In 1904 he graduated from Waterloo East High School. Between 1906 and 1914 he worked for various petrol companies. Then he founded the Puritan Coal Company, which was based in Chicago. At the same time he founded in his hometown of Waterloo, the company Arch McFarlane Fuel Company, Inc, which he headed in addition to all its other activities for the rest of his life. Since 1914, he was politically active as a member of the Republican Party. Between 1915 and 1922 he sat in the House of Representatives from Iowa, he served as Chairman since 1919. In 1922, he ran unsuccessfully in the primaries of his party for the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1927 and 1928 he was a member of the State Senate.

After the death of Lieutenant Governor Clem F. Kimball McFarlane was elected Lieutenant Governor of Iowa. This post he held 1928-1933. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. He served under governors John Hammill and Daniel Webster Turner. Between 1932 and 1954 he was a member with two short interruptions of the House of Representatives from Iowa, then to 1958 again to the State Senate. In 1953 he became president of the Pioneer Lawmakers Association. In 1960, Arch McFarlane ran again for the Senate from Iowa. In June, he won the primaries of his party. The actual choice was, as always, in the autumn of this year. In July, he was visiting the Republican National Convention in Chicago, at the then- Vice President Richard Nixon was nominated as presidential candidate of the party. During this Congress McFarland died suddenly of a heart attack. He was buried in his hometown of Waterloo.
