Hindustan Unilever Limited, formerly Hindustan Lever Limited ( HLL also called ) is an Indian consumer goods manufacturing company with headquarters in Mumbai. The company is listed in the share index BSE Sensex.

The company is India's largest consumer goods manufacturers and has approximately 41,000 employees (as of 2006). The company is a subsidiary of the Anglo- Dutch group Unilever. HLL is currently being directed by Harish Manwani.

As a consumer goods manufacturer HLL in India is market leader in the trade in tea, soaps, detergents and other household products.

The company was founded in 1933 under the name Lever Brothers India Limited.

Project Shakti in rural India

Together with the governments of several Indian States Hindustan Unilever has project Shakti ( in German: force) came into being. The goal of this public-private partnership is to let the poor rural population of India directly participate in the economic life and so to raise the living standards of the rural areas sustainable.

The Shakti project is one of many examples of successful cooperation between industry, governments and NGOs in the context of the Base of the Pyramid approach.

Among the brands that sells HLL include the ice cream flavor Kwality Walls, Lifebuoy, Lux, Breeze, Liril, Rexona, Hamam, Moti soaps, Pureit water " Purifer (?) ", Lipton tea, Brooke Bond tea, Bru coffee, Pepsodent and Close Up toothpaste and toothbrushes, as well as Surf, Rin and Wheel laundry detergents. Furthermore, Kissan, Annapurna salt, Pond's, Fair & Lovely, Lakme, Clinic Plus, Clinic All Clear, Sunsilk and Lux shampoos, Vim, Ala and Domex.
