Geography

Location

Horncastle is situated 27 kilometers east of the county town of Lincoln, in the southwest of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Until the eastern North Sea is about 30 km away. The village lies at the confluence of two small rivers Bain and Waring. The Witham River runs south-west 9 km away.

History

The Romans built a fort at Horncastle, which was part of the fortified Saxon Shore probably later. Although fixed, Horncastle was not located on a major Roman road. It therefore seems likely that the river Bain was the closest main thoroughfare. Little remains of the walls of the Roman fortress are still preserved. The Anglo-Saxons called the town Hyrnecastre, whence the present name is derived.
