Hossein Alizâdeh

Hossein Alizadeh (Persian حسین علیزاده; born 1951 in Tehran ) is a renowned Iranian composer, radif - preserver, researcher, teacher, and excellent Tar and Setar - player. From many he is known as Ostad ( master ) of Persian music. When critics he is considered one of the most influential artists of his generation.

He made many recordings with famous artists such as Mohammad -Reza Schadscharian, Nazeri, Khaladj and Gasparyan.

Biography

Alizadeh was born in 1951 in Tehran. He graduated from the Conservatory in 1975 and began to study composition and Persian music at the Faculty of Fine Arts of University of Tehran. He later continued his education at the University of Berlin in composition and musicology. He studied with various masters of traditional Persian music as Houshang Zarif, Ali Akbar Shahnazi, Only Ali Borumand, Mahmoud Karimi, Abdollah Davami, Yusef Forutan, and Sa'id Hormozi. From them he learned the radif of Persian music.

He plays the Tar and Setar and has recently Sallāneh and Schūrangīs from the ancient Persian lute Barbat reconstructed.

Awards

In 2007 he was nominated together with the musician Djivan Gasparyan Armenian for their album The Endless Vision for a Grammy Award. In 2008 he was elected to the most outstanding musicians of the year.

Inventions

  • Dad o Bidad: A new Maqam ( Dastgah ) in Persian music, through the combination of Guscheh in Dad from Dasgah of Mahour and the Guscheh of Bidad in Dastgah of Homayoun.
  • Sallaneh and Shoor - Angiz: Two new musical instruments derived from the ancient Persian lute Barbat.
