The hour record is the most prestigious record in cycling performance. In a time trial on a cycling track record aspirant tries to cover the longest possible route for an hour.

The history of the world hour record
First Record: 1893
The first hour record of 35.325 kilometers in 1893 by the later founder of the Tour de France, Henri Desgrange, set up and improved since then 34 times. It lies since July 19, 2005 at 49.700 km and was established by the Czech Ondřej Sosenka in Olympic Krylatskoje Velodrome in Moscow. He improved the nearly five -year-old previous best of British Chris Boardman to 259 m.
The hour record for women is 46.065 km and is held by the Dutch Leontien Zijlaard -van Moorsel since October 2003.
Controversy over the question: What is a bicycle?
The world records achieved 1984-1996 were canceled by the Cycling Union UCI in 2000 and are now only listed as " world records ", as the used there aerodynamically refined special wheels and seat positions (1985: failed world record attempt by Francesco Moser with oversized rear wheel; 1993 Graeme Obree developed Obree position) would be prohibited under the new regulations. So should only apply to records that are driven with conventional wheels, the technical equipment of Eddy Merckx in 1972 largely correspond and their frames form corresponds to the classic diamond frame. World records of 1984 and 1996 and their best performance on modern railway wheels after this period can only be recognized as world records.
Christopher Boardman had traveled in 1996 with an extreme riding position, with the arms outstretched, he drove a distance of 56.375 km. With the " normal" racing bike he could beat the record set by Eddy Merckx only just. Recumbents
The hour record for running exclusively with muscle cars is well above the record with a classic road bike. The Frenchwoman Barbara Buatois drove a fully faired recumbent on 19 July 2009, the Ford Motor Company Michigan Proving Grounds in Romeo, Michigan, a distance of 84.02 kilometers, making it the first woman to a distance of more than 80 km put back an hour with a recumbent bike. Men the current record ( down 3 August 2011 on the test track of the DEKRA ) holds Francesco Russo with 91.55 km .. The driven in European records on fully faired human powered vehicles are recognized by the World Human Powered Vehicle Association ( WHPVA ). The WRRA recognizes records of partially and unfaired recumbents. Records that are driven on the American continent, are recognized by the IHPVA.

In 2000, the UCI annulled in retrospect the world hour records from the years 1984 to 1996, since they were obtained with aerodynamically refined special wheels and seat positions which did not meet the new regulations.
