House of Siracusa

The Siracusa family (formerly Zaragoza) comes from Spain. It is first documented in 1118 in the city of Zaragoza as a branch of the family from the Béarn Roussellon. Gaston IV ( Béarn ), who had participated in the first crusade, freed from the Moors in the city of Zaragoza and received the title of Lord of Zaragoza. Since then, a branch of the " de Zaragoza " family called. Thomas Zaragoza came with Peter III 1283 ( Sicilian Vespers ) to Sicily, where he was invested with the barony Vizzini, as in Adohamento of King Federico III is to be read. Antonio Zaragoza was sent in 1319 as ambassador of the Duchy of Athens, to King Frederick III of Sicily. Perhaps the first Zaragoza were on Sicily members of the Catalan companies ( Almogàvers ). Pedro Zaragoza to 1333 was governor of the island of Djerba in the order of King Frederick of Sicily. Zurita in his Annales reported:

Over the centuries the family owned the fief Collesano, Cassaro, Xiridia, Monastero and others. Gaparo Siracusa received on 11 August 1498 by King Frederick the city Lagonegro. Jordanus Siracusa was Baron of the city Casacalenda. The main branch of the family originally lived in the town of Noto. Members of this branch were Pietro and his wife Margarita Siracusa, Baroness Cassaro, which include the ancestors of Queen Paola of Belgium, née Ruffo di Calabria.

The family was actively involved in the centennial feud between the Perollo family and the Count of Luna, who has entered into inter alia, as Caso di Sciacca in the story. As a result of this carnage took a part of the family to Palermo.

Antonio Siracusa was regent of the Supremo Consiglio d' Italia. Carlo Siracusa was a knight of the Alcántaraordens and Ottavio Siracusa, Knight of the Order of Santiago, inherited from his uncle Ottavio Corsetto the title of Duke of Casteldimirto, Count of Villalta and Baron of Xiaccati. The Duchy Casteldimirto later went on the Erbweg to the descendants of his sister Orietta, from the family of Stella, later Bonagia.

From Siracusa family from Sciacca also comes the Baroness Eufrosia Siracusa Valdaura, lodged in the legends of Sicily because of their tragic love affair with the viceroy Marcantonio Colonna and Natoli inspired to write his novel " La Dama tragica ". Her story is also described by Sciascia in the novel " The wine -colored sea."

The family coat of arms is blue with a silver dreiturmigen castle and a baron crown.
