Hudson River Region AVA

Hudson River Region AVA ( recognized since 6 July 1982) is an American Viticultural Area in the U.S. state of New York. The area is located in the administrative area of ​​Columbia County, bordering the counties Rensselaer County, Greene County and Ulster County.

Despite the peripheral definition of the area of ​​the vineyards are rarely more than 3 km from the Hudson River. They occupy it slopes to the west of the river that flows coming from the north towards the south. In this orientation, the location of the vineyard can be warmed by the morning sun. Sea breezes that pass through the valley of the Hudson River to the wine region cool climate in the summer, but the vineyards in winter help to more favorable conditions than in the environment.

The Winery Brotherhood Winery, founded in 1839, the area has the oldest still operating well in North America.

The overall cool climate viticulture affects the choice of grape varieties. In addition to very hardy hybrid grapes, the choice is also increasingly on early maturing European noble grapes.
