Humphrey of Montfort

Humphrey of Montfort († February 12, 1284 ) was Lord of Tyre and Beirut.

He was a younger son of Philip of Montfort, Lord of Castres, La Ferte- Alais and Bréthencourt, Tyre and Toron, and his second wife Maria of Antioch - Armenia.

On October 1, 1274 married Humphrey Eschiva of Ibelin (* 1253, † 1312), daughter of John of Ibelin, Lord of Beirut ( † 1264 ) and his wife Alice of La Roche sur l' Ognon. With Eschiva he had seven children:

  • Amaury de Montfort († December 28, 1304 );
  • Ruben de Montfort († September 8, 1313 ) ∞ 1299 Mary of Ibelin († 1340), daughter of Balian of Ibelin († 1302), Seneschal of Cyprus;
  • Alix or Helvis (1295 used).

1282 died his sister Isabella of Ibelin and Eschiva inherited from her dominion Beirut. 1283 also died Humfrieds brother John of Montfort. King Hugh I of Jerusalem, had previously secured the right to collect Johanns rule Tyre to royal domain, but now allowed Humphrey to take this into possession. When Humphrey died just six months later, the new King John II the rule Tyrus pulled a finally and awarded it to his brother, Amalric of Tyre, probably because he thought Humfrieds sons too young to effectively defend the government against the Muslims. The rule of Beirut remained in the possession Eschivas.
