Iain Smith (Scottish politician)

Iain Smith ( born May 1, 1960 in Gateside ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Liberal Democrats.

Life

Smith attended Bell Baxter High School in Cupar. He then continued his education at Newcastle University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in politics and economics from. Beginning in 1986, Smith served as a regional politician in the Unitary Authority Fife and was between 1996 and 1999 Chairman of the Liberal Democrats in Fife. In the years 1999 and 2000, Smith held the post of managing director of the Parliamentary Liberal Democrats.

Political career

In the Scottish Parliament elections in 1999 Smith won the direct mandate of the constituency North East Fife and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament. Here, Smith won the only direct mandate for the Liberal Democrats in the election Region Mid Scotland and Fife. In the parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007, he defended the constituency, but was defeated in the 2011 parliamentary elections the candidate of the Scottish National Party, Roderick Campbell. Because Smith was not set up as a list candidate for the constituency, he missed the re- entry into parliament.
