Inácio do Nascimento de Morais Cardoso

Inácio do Nascimento de Morais Cardoso ( born December 20 1811 in Murça; † 23 February 1883 in Lisbon ) was the eleventh Patriarch of Lisbon, Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Morais Cardoso studied at the University of Coimbra, where he received licentiate in theology. On 19 December 1835, he was ordained a priest. He served as treasurer of the church of St. Roche as well as chaplain and confessor Misericódia of King Pedro V of Portugal and was treasurer of the royal chapel in the Palácio Necessidades.

Pope Pius IX. appointed him on 28 September 1863 Bishop of Faro. Manuel Bento Cardinal Rodrigues da Silva consecrated him on 14 February 1863 in Lisbon bishop. He participated in the years 1869 and 1870 at the First Vatican Council in Rome. He was raised on 25 April 1871 the Patriarch of Lisbon.

On December 22, 1873 it took Pius IX. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Nereo e Achilleo in the College of Cardinals. He participated in the conclave of 1878, which Leo XIII. chose. He died at the age of 71 years in Lisbon and was buried in the Lisbon Cathedral.
