Indian River (Florida)

The Indian River is a river on the east coast of the U.S. state of Florida. It has a length from north to south of 246 miles and forms part of the Indian River Lagoon. The water is wide and flat. In him fresh water and salt water mix. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway uses the Indian River from. The northern end of the Indian River is located in Volusia County, very close to its southern border to the Brevard County. To the south are the Indian River St. Lucie Inlet extends to the north of Martin County.

To the east lie Merritt Iceland in the north- east, the Mosquito Laggon with which the Indian River is connected by a small channel. Compared to the island on which there is the Space Center of NASA, are Titusville and Indian River City. In Indian Harbour Beach, a good bit further south of the Banana River empties one that extends east of Merritt Iceland and the spit that separates the water system from the open Atlantic.

Inflows

With fresh water of the Indian River is fed by a series of inflows from the West. Among them are:

  • Turkey Creek

The Merritt Iceland Barge Canal connects the Indian River with the Sykes Creek and supplies the water as fresh water, on the Mosquito Lagoon connects this ship canal to the Indian River, however, with the Atlantic Ocean. There are also several drainage canals that feed the lagoon freshwater from the catchment area of the St. Johns River.
