Infanta Marie Anne of Portugal

Anna Maria do Carmo de Bragança (Portuguese Dona Ana Maria do Carmo Henrique Teresa Adelaide Joana Inês Carolina Sofia Eulalia Leopoldina Isabel Micaela Gabriela Rafaela Francisca Bernardina de Assis e de Paula Inácia Gonzaga de Bragança ) ( born July 13, 1861 in Bronnbach on the Tauber; † July 31, 1942 in New York) was a Infanta of Portugal from the House of Braganza, by marriage Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and Duchess of Nassau, as well as regent of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg from 1908 until 1912.

Life

Infanta Maria Anna was a daughter of King Michael I of Portugal and Princess Adelaide of Löwenstein -Wertheim -Rosenberg.

On June 21, 1893 married at Castle Fischhorn near Zell am See Hereditary Grand Duke Wilhelm of Luxembourg, since 1905, Grand Duke William IV ( 1852-1912 ), son of Grand Duke Adolf of Luxembourg and Princess Marie Adelheid of Anhalt- Dessau.

Drawn by a serious illness, Wilhelm 1908 appointed his wife to the regent of the Grand Duchy, before Grand Duchess Maria Anna was determined on 13 November 1908 regent. Served in this office until the Grand Duchess Grand Duke William's death on February 25, 1912, before he pursued a second reign through adolescence her daughter Grand Duchess Marie -Adélaïde on June 15, 1912.

Grand Duchess Maria Anna died at 81 years in 1942 in New York City, where she had taken refuge after the German occupation of Luxembourg. Their final resting place is located in the crypt of the Cathedral of Luxembourg.
