International Film Festival of Kerala

The International Film Festival of Kerala held annually in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the Indian state of Kerala.

Together with the International Film Festival of India and the Kolkata Film Festival, it is one of the most important film festivals in the Indian subcontinent.

Orientation

The international competition of the festival is limited to films from Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Outside of the competition retrospectives, homages and tributes are held and organized side rails with current Indian cinema, short films and documentaries.

Furthermore, there is during the festival, which is traditionally held in December, a film market and seminars on various movie themes.

History and Organization

The first festival was held in 1995. Since 1998 takes the newly established Kerala State Chalachitra Academy ( " chalachitra " means " moving picture " ) as an organizer on. It was launched by the Ministry of Culture of the State of Kerala in life and is also dedicated to the event, another film festival in India, the cinematic training, allocation of film awards, and more.

1999 was part of the festival for the first time instead of the international film competition. The first president of the jury was an Indian film director Adoor Gopalakrishnan.

The International Film Festival of Kerala belongs to that lower part of the film festivals in the world, who have received accreditation by the international film producers association FIAPF (see also List of FIAPF - accredited film festivals).

Prices

The main prize of the international competition is The Golden Crow Pheasant Award ( also Suvarna Chakoram ). Crow pheasant is the English name for the Chinese spur Cuckoo ( Centropus sinensis), a widespread species in India. The price is INR 1,000,000 - doped and is awarded in equal shares to the director and the film's producers.

Other award at the festival awards include The Silver Crow Pheasant Award ( also Rajata Chakoram ) for Best Director and Best Debut Film Award for Best First Feature. Also, there is an audience award.

The international film critics association FIPRESCI award as world in other film festivals, a FIPRESCI prize to a film of the international competition.
