Iranian constitutional referendum, December 1979

The constitutional referendum in Iran in December 1979 was a referendum on 2/3 December 1979 on measures adopted by the Assembly of Experts new Constitution of Iran.

Prehistory

The Assembly of Experts worked from 19 August 1979 to 12 September 1979 a new constitution. On November 15, 1979, voted by the Assembly on the draft Constitution of Ruhollah Khomeini and adopted by majority. Through the referendum, the Constitution should be confirmed by the people. Grand Ayatollah Shariatmadari Kasem rejected the draft constitution of the Assembly of Experts, and said an election boycott.

Results and consequences

The referendum went,

" Without serious disputes over the stage. In Tabriz there were clashes of supporters Schariatmadaris and Khomeini supporters and in the larger cities Baluchistan could not be matched because the polling stations were blocked. [ ... ] So far are the results from 83 cities. There, 99.7 Proz [ent ] for the proposed constitution. Figures on the turnout - which one is anyway allowed to give any deeper faith - are not yet available. "

With the outcome of the referendum the people of Iran took to the new Iranian constitution. The Constitution, tailored to the revolutionary leader Ruhollah Khomeini, had, after his death, to be reviewed and approved by another referendum. This Constitution of 28 July 1989 still holds true today.
