Iranian Constitutional Convention election, 1979

The choice for the Constituent Assembly of Iran was held on 3 August 1979. The meeting was also called the " Assembly of Experts " in Iran, she had the task of drawing up a new Iranian constitution. At this meeting, 73 seats were provided for 428 persons applied for and were approved by the Revolutionary Council. The election was boycotted by the National Front and other political groups.

Result

The election was clearly won by the Islamic Republican Party, among the 73 elected members, 55 were mujtahids ( mullahs ). Highest-ranking cleric, Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri was, the most prominent non- cleric who later became president of Iran, Abū l -Hasan Banisadr. As chairman of the Assembly of Experts was elected by the members Mahmoud Taleghani, who died a month later under mysterious circumstances.

The Assembly of Experts to draw up the new Iranian constitution was dissolved at the start of the referendum on the constitution on December 2, 1979.
