Iranian constitutional referendum, 1989

The constitutional referendum in Iran in 1989 was a referendum on 28 July 1989 on the revised Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran. She had become necessary after the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini died, and he was Supreme Leader and Leader according to Article 1 of the Constitution. The referendum was held together with the Iranian presidential election in 1989.

Constitutional amendment

The text drafted by the Assembly of Experts in September 1979 and confirmed in a referendum in December 1979 constitution was tailored to the revolutionary leader Ruhollah Khomeini. Khomeini feared after his death and created a power vacuum in early 1988 the Expediency Council, which should ultimately have on disputed laws between Parliament and the Guardian Council, the last word, and thus the decision. This Expediency, not mentioned in the old constitution, was legitimized in Article 112. Articles 5 and 107 were amended, that the supreme leader of the Ummah must not simultaneously be the Supreme (religious ) law scholars but for the office [ to be ] suitable who has next to Islamic scholarship through appropriate political, administrative and social skills. [note 1] Furthermore, it was inserted in Article 111 that it should be possible for the expert ( Article 108) to relieve the revolutionary leaders of his office. [Note 2] The Office of the Prime Minister was abolished, but this office with the Office of the President together (Article 113). Article 176 was for the Security Council created this new and increased resources. A total of 46 articles of the Constitution were changed.
