Isaac Holmes

Isaac Holmes ( May 3, 1758 in Charleston, South Carolina, † April 3, 1812 ) was an American merchant and politician of the Province of South Carolina ( Federalist Party).

Career

About Isaac Holmes are not recorded much information. He was a member of the South Carolina General Assembly. During the Revolutionary War he served 1778-1780 in the House of Representatives of the Province of South Carolina. After the fall of Charleston in May 1780, he was captured by the British, then contacted with a boat to St. Augustine (Florida), where he was imprisoned. One of his fellow prisoners was Christopher Gadsden, the then Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina. They were replaced in 1781. After the war he was elected himself to the Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina, a position which he held between February 15, 1791 and December 5, 1791. On September 19, 1791, he was awarded by the Federal Ministry of Finance (Treasury Department) he was appointed tax collector for Charleston. He held that post until his retirement in 1797.

Holems Isaac was the son of Elizabeth Stobo Stanyarne and Isaac Holmes. He married on January 5, 1779 Elizabeth Legare ( 1762-1835 ).
