Thomas Bee

Thomas Bee (* 1739 in Charleston, South Carolina, † February 18, 1812 in Pendleton, South Carolina) was an American lawyer and politician of the Province of South Carolina.

Career

Thomas Bee was home schooled by a tutor before he later attended the University of Oxford in England. He studied law and began upon receipt of his admission to practice as a lawyer in Charleston on January 27 in 1761. Bee had in 1769 held the office of Commissioner stamp duty in Charleston. Then it was 1775 as justice of the peace and worked 1776-1778 as administrative judge. On June 11, 1790 U.S. President George Washington nominated him to be a judge on United States Court for the District of South Carolina. Bee was confirmed three days later by the U.S. Senate and received on the same day his appointment. Bee held this position until his death. 1801 Bee was nominated and confirmed as a result of the Midnight Judges Act by U.S. President John Adams for the post of Chief Justice (Chief Judge ) of the fifth judicial district, but declined the post from this. Bee published in 1810, the collection of decisions of the District Court of South Carolina. He also ran his own plantation in Charleston.

Bee also pursued a political career. He represented 1762-1764 St. Paul's, then in 1765 St. Peters and last 1772-1776 St. Andrews in the House of Representatives of the Province of South Carolina. He also worked with 1775-1776 at the Council of Safety of the revolutionary movement. Bee took at this time in part as a delegate to the first and second Provincial Congress. He was 1776-1779, 1781, 1782 and 1786-1788 member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina. During this time he held from January to February 1779 Office of the Speakers. Then he was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina, a position which he held 1779-1780. After that, he was 1780-1782 Member of the Continental Congress. Bee was elected to the Senate of South Carolina, where he worked 1788-1790. He died on 18 February 1812 in Pendleton (South Carolina) and was then buried on the Woodstock Cemetery in Goose Creek.

Family

Thomas Bee was the father of Barnard Elliot Bee senior (1787-1853), a diplomat of the Republic of Texas, and great-grandfather of U.S. Representative Carlos Bee ( 1867-1932 ).
