ISO 3166-2:ES
The list of ISO -3166 -2 codes for Spain contains the codes for the 17 Spanish autonomous communities ( communidad autónoma ), 50 provinces ( provincia ) and two Spanish exclaves in North Africa ( ciudades autónomas en el Norte de África ).
The codes are composed of two parts which are separated by a hyphen. The first part indicates the country code according to ISO 3166-1 ( for Spain ES ), the second the code for the autonomous community, province, or city. The current country code is in the Newsletter II-1 of 3 February 2010 (PDF) last updated.
The codes have been updated by the ISO four times or revised (2000, twice in 2002 and 2010). In the first newsletter (ISO 3166-2:2000-06-21 ) of 21 June 2000, a write error have been fixed (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) and added the alternative spelling of the regional official language in two provinces (Girona and Lleida).
In the fourth ISO 3166 -2- publication ( ISO 3166-2:2002-12-10 ) of 10 December 2002 was a bug in the province of Balearic Islands ( Baleares ) for the Autonomous Community of Balearic Islands corrected.
In Newsletter II-1 (ISO 3166-2:2010-02-03 ) from February 3, 2010 were all autonomous communities that consist of only one province, one different from the provincial code. Furthermore, the Spanish toponyms of the objects in the Autonomous Communities of Galicia, Catalonia and Balearic Islands were replaced by Galician and Catalan because alone they were official.
