Itoigawa, Niigata

Itoigawa (Japanese糸 鱼 川 市, -shi ) is a city in Niigata Prefecture in Japan.

Geography

Itoigawa is located west of Joetsu and east of Toyama on the Japan Sea.

History

The city Itoigawa was posted on June 1, 1954 from the former Machi Itoigawa (糸 鱼 川 町, machi ), and the Mura Uramoto (浦 本村, -mura ), Shimohayakawa (下 早 川村, -mura ), Kamihayakawa (上 早 川村, -mura ), Yamatogawa (大 和 川村, -mura ), Saikai (西海 村, -mura ), Ōno (大 野村, -mura ), Nechi (根 知 村, -mura ) and Kotaki (小 滝 村, -mura ) of the district Nishikubiki founded. On 1 October of the same year, the village Imai (今井 村, -mura ) was followed. On 19 March 2005, the municipalities were amalgamated Nou (能 生 町, machi ) and Oumi (青海 町, machi ) of the same county, who was thereupon be dissolved.

Attractions

  • Oyashirazu (親知らず, dt " wisdom tooth", actually literally " parents unknown " - according to the assumption that these teeth occur only when the children have already moved out of the parental home ). The gravel beach in front Oyashirazu was a famous archaeological site for Jadeitkiesel that have been washed out of the Renge belt. Meanwhile, the beach, however, were largely screened by local Jadesucher and tourists, so that hardly any good pieces to be found. In addition to the minerals jadeite and natrolite, omphacite, Pectolite, prehnite, Xonotlite, zircon and quartz variety chrysoprase were found at Oyashirazu. For the minerals Itoigawait Rengeit and the place is also considered a type locality.
