Jacob de Kempenaer

Jacobus de Mattheüs Kempenaer ( born July 6, 1793 in Amsterdam, † February 12, 1870 in Arnhem ) was a liberal, conservative Dutch politician and later from 1848 to 1849 Chairman of the Council of Ministers.

After attending the grammar school and the Atheneum Illustre in Amsterdam de Kempenaer studied law in Leiden and worked as a lawyer in Arnhem. 1813 and 1815 he was a volunteer during the War of Liberation. From 1840 he was a Member of Parliament ( Tweede Kamer ) and was among the nine politicians who took the initiative for a new constitution. 1848 was de Kempenaer member of the Basic Law Commission Johan Rudolf Thorbecke and played an important role in bringing about the reforms as interior minister. Following the resignation of Dirk Donker Curtius in May 1849, he was Head of Cabinet of Ministers. 1849 broke with Thorbecke, because de Kempenaer rejected a strict separation of church and state, held at the State School and Parliament continue zubilligte influence on the colonies.
