Piet de Jong

Peter Josef Sietze " Piet " de Jong ( born April 3, 1915 in Apeldoorn ) is a retired Dutch politician of the Katholieke Volkspartij and the oldest living former heads of state or head of government worldwide.

Work

The professional soldier with the rank of naval captain was from 1959 to 1963 Secretary of State for Marine Affairs and was established in 1963 as the successor of Sim Visser Dutch defense minister. In this office he remained until 1967. April 5, 1967 to July 6, 1971 he was the Dutch Prime Minister. During this time he was a week long, from 7 to 14 January 1970, after the resignation of Leo de block in personal union also economy minister. From 1971 to 1974 he was leader of the CIP in the First Chamber of the Dutch Parliament.

De Jong was considered to be an excellent team leader and Premier was the first Dutch Prime Minister, who performed weekly press conferences.

After the end of his premiership him the Grand Cross of the Orde van Oranje -Nassau was awarded.
