Jan van Scorel

Jan van Scorel, ( born August 1, 1495 Schoorl ( Scorel ) in Alkmaar, † December 6, 1562 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch painter.

Scorel was a pupil of Willem Cornelisz at Haarlem, Jacob Cornelisz van of Oostsanen to Amsterdam and Utrecht by Jan Mabuse. He then formed in Nuremberg under the influence of Dürer and Italy. From 1522 to 1523 he lived in Rome and returned to the Netherlands in 1525. In Alkmaar, Gent, Haarlem and Utrecht in last he then worked. He died there as a canon on December 6, 1562nd

Scorel is the one Dutch painter who worked groundbreaking for the imitation of the Italians. His main works are:

  • A wing altar in the parish church of St. Martin to Obervellach in Carinthia (1520, still under the influence Dürer )
  • Tempera paintings from the Old Testament ( Church Warmenhuizen at Alkmaar )
  • Crucifixion (1530, Bonn, Rhineland Museum )
  • Repentant Magdalene and Bathsheba in the bath (Amsterdam) and
  • David Goliath killing ( Dresden Gallery )

Free from the Italian influence are his portraits, including his beloved Agathe van Hoven Even in the Palazzo Doria at Rome. (See Toman, studies of J. v. S. ( Leipz. 1889) ).
