Jean-Louis Tauran

Jean -Louis Cardinal Tauran ( born April 5, 1943 in Bordeaux, France ) is a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and current cardinal deacon.

Life

Jean -Louis Tauran received after studying philosophy and Catholic theology at the Institut Catholique de Toulouse and Rome on September 20, 1969, the sacrament of Holy Orders for the Archdiocese of Bordeaux. Subsequently, he received his doctorate in Rome in the Department of canon law and worked as a chaplain in the Archdiocese of Bordeaux. In 1975 he entered the diplomatic service of the Vatican and worked until 1983 as a secretary for Nunciatures in the Dominican Republic and Lebanon.

In 1984 and 1986 he was on the staff of the special missions to Haiti, Syria and Lebanon. In addition he was in the 80s at the Delegation of the Holy See at the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe.

On 1 December 1990, Pope John Paul II appointed Titular Archbishop of Thelepte and as Secretary in the Department of the Foreign relations of the Vatican in the Vatican Secretariat of State. Tauran held that post until 2003. He received his episcopal consecration the pope on January 6, 1991. Therefore cardinal is considered a top diplomat of the Holy See. For 13 years he was the Vatican's "foreign minister", before nuncio, among others, in Lebanon.

In the consistory of 2003, Jean -Louis Tauran was taken as a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Apollinare alle Terme Neroniane - Alessandrine in the College of Cardinals and entrusted in the autumn of the same year with the leadership of the Vatican Secret Archives and the Vatican Library. On 1 September 2007 he followed Paul Cardinal Poupard according as president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and head of the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with Muslims.

On 21 February 2011, he was called by Pope Benedict XVI. confirmed as a cardinal deacon. In this capacity he took part in the conclave, 2013, through him, inter alia, approached the task with the Habemus papam to announce on 13 March of the same year by the benediction loggia of St. Peter's Basilica to the public the election of Pope Francis and this shall all the pallium at its inauguration on March 19 of the same year.

Cardinal Tauran since 1996 Grand Cross ad honorem Konventualkaplan and since December 4, 2006 Honour and Devotion Grand Cross of the Order of Malta - Bailli. He is a member and advisor to the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.

Tauran suffers from Parkinson's disease.
