Jelšava

Jelšava ( German Eltsch or older Jelschau and Ilsau, Hungarian Jolsva or older Jólsva, latin Alnovia ) is a town in central Slovakia at Revúca. It is located in the hilly foothills on the southern edge of the Slovak Ore Mountains.

It was first mentioned in writing in 1243 as Ilswa and was then founded by German miners. After the decline of the mining industry, the craft came to the fore, the proportion of the German population was in 1930 when only 197 of 3493 inhabitants.

Until 1918 the town belonged in the county Gemer and small Hont the Kingdom of Hungary and came to the newly created Czechoslovakia. By the First Vienna Award she came from 1938 to 1945 for a short time again to Hungary.
